We would like to thank all those of you who visited us throughout December. Happily, in spite of the snow, it was a very good month for us, which then finished with fantastic New Year's Eve celebrations in both restaurants - well oiled too. We all had a great time!
As we go into 2011 there is no shortage of economic pessimists, especially in the light of the VAT increase. We do however remain determined to hold the cost of our incredibly popular Set Menus (£17.50 for 2 courses, £23.00 for 3 courses) for as long as possible (up-to-date menus are always on our website
). As I write, the four of us have just eaten our first Set Menu of the year at Old Amersham. We feel happy and replete ... that's what good food can do! The roasted breast of guinea fowl with wild mushroom jus, baked spinach and charred new potatoes was quite delicious; just the right sort of comfort food to combat the dreary rain outside. Unusually we were rather abstemious and drank only water (don't worry, the New Year's resolution of no wine at lunch time is only for the first week of the year). Otherwise we would probably have chosen the 2009 Fleurie from Coudert-Appert, probably the best Cru Beaujolais that we have EVER listed. I could not resist pudding though: Gilbey's Lemon Tart. Is our Lemon Tart the best in the world? Most probably, yes!
Our real New Year's resolution? To give you even more happiness than we were able to in 2010. How? ... well, something to do with great food, delicious wines, fantastic smiley service and true value for money. That's one to keep!
